It you are one of the many in credit card debt and you feel that you are beginning to sink in over your head there are some steps to help keep yourself afloat. Whether you are in debt with one credit card or a whole wallet full, it is never too late to get your credit card debt problem under control. Here are some tips on getting out of credit card debt.
- Pay off High Interest. If your credit card debt problem is a result of more than one card, the first thing you should do is pay off the cards with the highest interest rates. After your card is paid off your first instinct may be to close a high interest card. If you pay off a card this will improve your debt to credit ratio which in turn improves you credit. With your improved credit score you can call you credit card company and see if they can work with you to lower your interest rate.
- Transfer Balances. The lower your interest rate is on your credit card, each payment you make has a greater effect on paying off the remaining balance. This is something that you should do only if you are sure you are getting a lower interest rate. Many credit card companies send out solicitations that seem like a good move. Some low interest rates are only offered with a promotional period and after the promotion is over you could get stuck with a card that has a higher interest rate than you started with. This also does not mean taking out credit cards frivolously to pay off you debt. You need to be careful when opening new cards. Understanding the interest on any credit card you have is the best way to get out of credit card debt.
- Stop spending. Stop using you credit cards even if it means you have to cut up your cards or leave them in your sock drawer. This should make sense if you are trying to pay off your credit card debt but the temptation of debt is how you got in this situation in the first place. If you are trying to pay off debt stop spending more than you have too even if you are not using the credit card. Instead of going out to eat or on big vacations use the spare money that you bring in to pay credit cards. It may not be easy to make such sacrifices but the sooner you pay off dept the less you will end up paying in interest. You can let you friends and family know you are paying off credit card debt so that they can understand and appreciate that you are cutting back on expenses.
- Ask for help. Some people may need to seek help from a credit counselor who can help work with credit card companies to make a plan. Checking with your state attorney general's office can provide a list to help find a credit counselor. Even if you just call your credit card company they may be willing to work with you and put you on a payment plan. A payment plan could put shopping restrictions on you card until you pay your balance off. Make sure you do your research and understand all of you options. It may take a while but as long as you make a plan and stick to it, you will get out of credit card debt.
